Approval To Consolidate And/Or Co-locate: Rufus Cage Elementary School Into Dora B. Lantrip Elementary School; Lamar Fleming, Jr., And John L. McReynolds Middle Schools Into Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for Young Men; And William P. Hobby Elementary School Into Audrey H. Lawson Middle School

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) School Board is asked to approve the closure of the Rufus Cage and William P. Hobby elementary school facilities and the Lamar Fleming, Jr., and John L. McReynolds middle school facilities, and to consolidate or co-locate these schools with other facilities at the end of the 2025-2026 school year.
The board is also asked to approve attendance boundary changes to include the attendance zones of the facilities to be closed where necessary for the Martin Luther King, Jr., Early Childhood Center (MLK ECC), Dora B. Lantrip Elementary School, Audrey H. Lawson Middle School, and Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for Young Men. The changes will modify attendance boundaries for co-locations as follows:
* Cage Elementary School (ES) to Lantrip ES;
* Fleming Middle School (MS) and McReynolds MS to Mickey Leland College Preparatory Academy for Young Men; and
* Hobby ES grades one through five (1-5) to Lawson MS.
Hobby ES prekindergarten and kindergarten students will be zoned to and become students of the MLK ECC.
Board policy requires students to attend school within a designated attendance zone unless a transfer has been approved. Cage ES, Hobby ES, Fleming MS, and McReynolds MS are experiencing declining enrollment and shifting demographics while operating with funding that has not kept pace with inflation and rising costs, and managing aging, underutilized facilities that are increasingly expensive to maintain.
