Approval To Name A Conference Room At Waltrip High School The Mayor Whitmire Community Room
body
This agenda item is to request approval from the Houston Independent School District School Board to name a conference room at Waltrip High School (HS) The Mayor Whitmire Community Room.
John Whitmire, the former dean of the Texas Senate, was sworn into office as Houston’s 63rd mayor in January of 2024. Mayor Whitmire graduated from Waltrip HS in 1968. After graduating from Waltrip HS, he soon began working for the Texas food stamp office and would continue serving the public long thereafter. Mayor Whitmire’s public service includes being a member of the Texas House of Representatives for 10 years and a member of the Texas Senate for 40 years. He continues to work tirelessly for the people of the City of Houston.
Consistent with Board Policy CW(LOCAL), Naming Facilities, the superintendent’s designee appointed a committee of appropriate individuals to recommend a name for the Waltrip HS conference room. The committee recommended that the school conference room be named The Mayor Whitmire Community Room. The new name will honor one of Waltrip High School’s most distinguished alumni.
